Top 10 Banting Rules
By applying these Banting rules to your daily eating habits you are likely to shed some weight initially & experience fairly dramatic weight loss after a few months.
However, it is important to note that everyone is different & the way certain people’s bodies adapt to this way of eating could be different to others despite applying these Banting diet rules to their lifestyles.
This therefore means that some will experience more weight loss and health improvements than others.
So, to enjoy some of the incredible health & weight loss benefits you could get from this way of eating, here are the 10 Banting rules to live by…
- Eat real, wholesome food only – avoid processed junk food & always choose organic, free range, grass-fed meat, eggs & dairy
- Avoid sugars completely – Xylitol, Erythritol or Stevia are sweet substitutes you can use but do not opt for artificial sweeteners which could contain all sorts of nasty chemicals & preservatives
- Cut out carbohydrate from your diet especially simple carbs including bread, pasta, rice, breakfast cereals, pastries, cakes, etc – You’ll get your body’s daily carbohydrate requirement from vegetables (green leafy veggies are best)
- Fruit & Nuts – only eat fruit sparingly as it has a high sugar content (especially bananas) – nuts such as almonds, walnuts, macadamias & pecan nuts make good snacks but should be limited if you are looking to lose weight (remember peanuts are legumes & must be avoided)
- Avoid grains, gluten, wheat, rye, barley, couscous, quinoa etc – they are toxic & inflammatory
- Eat good fats (such as grass-fed animal fats, unsalted butter, lard, duck fat, ghee, olive oil, coconut oil & avocados) but avoid trans fats found in margarine, vegetable oils & omega-6 – so do not cook with sunflower oil
- Eat until you are full – by not eating addictive types of foods (simple carbs, sugars & processed foods) you will feel satisfied & won’t want another helping
- Eggs (free range) are fine to eat – they are healthy & keep you feeling full for longer especially after breakfast which will keep you for craving a mid-morning snack
- Dairy products are fine to eat as long as they’re organic & come from grass-fed cows – always opt for the full cream version & avoid so called “fat free” versions as they often contain large amounts of sugar & preservatives.
- Do not snack between meals & only eat when you’re hungry – if you don’t feel like lunch don’t have it, it’s better to skip a meal than force yourself to eat when you’re not hungry.
Professor Tim Noakes has had a significant impact on the soaring popularity of the Banting diet in South Africa & elsewhere in the world mainly due to the enormous success he has had with it in reversing his diabetes & shedding a significant amount of weight.
Banting is, however, so much more than just a diet – it is more of a lifestyle & a way of eating that could have a dramatic impact on both your health & the way you look.
After William Banting had managed to lose so much weight on the LCHF diet prescribed to him by Dr Harvey, this way of eating became the standard diet for weight loss until around 1960 when it was replaced by the “heart healthy” low fat, high carb diet.
Banting is once again regaining its former popularity due to the spectacular results so many people are experiencing by eating this LCHF diet which is the exact opposite to the so called “heart healthy” diet.
Losing Weight Is All About Hunger Control & Not Portion Control
The beauty with the low-carb Banting styled Paleo way of eating is that you can basically eat as much as you like with little danger of over eating…
…this is because real LCHF Paleo foods & meals are non-addictive and will leave you feeling satisfied & satiated without wanting more or still feeling hungry.
This is exactly what helps you control your hunger naturally and is exactly what Prof Tim Noakes keeps on saying about eating low-carb, wholesome foods – they are non-addictive and will make you feel & look better.

PS. The Keto & Banting diets are very similar eating plans with one of the main differences being that Keto restricts the intake of carbohydrates to the extent that your body goes into a state of ketosis which forces it to use fat (ketones) for energy instead of carbs
Banting sounds interesting and I am just about to get on it. I am a person who have struggled with excess weight for a long time. I succeeded once with Dr Cohen’s Personalised weight control but I regained the weight later. Please motivate me, I really need to shed kilos.
